Finding a home: A new chapter for Streetreads
One of the best things about working for, and leading, a charity, is the people you meet and the creative energy that bursts from them. Several years ago Simon Community Scotland merged with Streetwork in Edinburgh and I was introduced to a lovely supporter called Rachel Cowan.
Rachel told us the story of Streetreads, how she met someone who was begging on the streets of Edinburgh and offered to buy them a sandwich. ‘Could you buy me a book?’ was the response, one that surprised and delighted Rachel, herself a very keen reader.
Cancer Card: Bridging the Gap in Cancer Support Services
Living with incurable breast cancer has been a defining time in my life. Throughout this experience, I've come to understand the critical need for robust support systems for those affected by this devastating disease. This led me to found Cancer Card, a charity dedicated to revolutionising how we access and deliver cancer support services. While Cancer Card doesn't provide direct medical care, its impact is immeasurable and one I wish I was able to experience when I received my diagnosis six years ago.
Putting Cancer Cards into the hands of everyone that needs support
Unfortunately over 32,000 people are diagnosed with cancer every year in Scotland. Hearing such a diagnosis is devastating. A one stop shop for information, Cancer Card’s aim is to ensure each and every one of those people who hears the words ‘you have cancer’ quickly and easily find the support that they need.
The cost of doing business during a Winter Crisis
The cost of living crisis is hitting hard and escalating costs are a significant challenge for businesses across Scotland. With inflation recently hitting a 40-year high and energy costs forecast to increase again in spring, business leaders are facing serious decisions on delivering priorities.
